Electronic Arts released a twelve minute trailer that consolidates the previous four mini-trailers released in the past few weeks into one handy and manageable trailer along with some fighter jet and tank scenes for good luck.
Showing off the new Frostbite 2 engine with great visuals and lighting, typically awesome sound effects (such as the rather sickening thuds when receiving damage) and engine’s trademark destructibility. Certainly EA’s claims that the forthcoming Battlefield 3 has the potential to unseat Activision’s Call of Duty franchise from its complacent throne may some creditability after all? Admittedly all the ‘in-game’ footage has been generated from a PC rather than a console, but compared with the ailing COD engine and the previous Frostbite engine, there’s plenty to admire between the fast-paced scenes.
Unfortunately there are certain indicators that Battlefield 3′s November release is moving away from the established and celebrated Battlefield formula and emulating the Call of Duty series with scripted and quick time events, something that didn’t particularly work for EA’s reboot of ‘Medal of Honor‘. But as a fan of shooter games who has deserted Black Ops in favour of Battlefield: Bad Company 2 and the rather excellent Vietnam expansion, there’s no doubting that Battlefield 3 ranks very high on my pre-order list…
