We already reported that Chris Evans had signed on to play Captain America in Marvel Studio’s upcoming Cap and Avengers movies, and now that cast has been rounded out by the addition of two decent actors to play the villains tormenting Marvel’s super-patriot.
First up, perennial snarling villain Hugo Weaving is joining the cast as Nazi supervillain The Red Skull. The character has been one of the primary antagonists for cap since 1941 (real world and comics continuity, anal-retention fans!), so it makes sense that he should be the main villain in the movie. A former bellhop hand-picked and trained by Hitler himself to be the ultimate Nazi, he fell victim to his own ‘death dust’, leaving him with a twisted and reddened skull-like visage. He was lost in suspended animation, just like Cap, so continues to menace him in the present day. It’s the sort of scenery-devouring role Weaving cut his teeth on, so this a promising casting.
Character actor Toby Young has signed on as Arnim Zola, a scientist who starts out human, but winds up as a computer program in a robot body. A Nazi biochemist with very little by the way of morals, he’s committed such scallywaggery as cloning Hitler into a supervillain called “Hate-Monger”, as well as several things that aren’t bat-guano insane. Toby Jones is a much-underrated actor – he’s probably the standout in The Mist, in an unshowy role amongst an already-strong ensemble cast. It should be fun to see what he does with such a juicy comic-book villain role.
Will the casting of two respected character actors quell the Onemetal Evans-hate? Somehow I doubt it, but hopefully such fine folk being out to kill him should be at least reassuring.
