Alt-music and film gathering SXSW may be an unabashed hipster-fest, but this weekend it played host to the first screening of footage from Predators, as well as hordes of Pabst-swilling degenerates in hemp sandals. Produced by Robert Rodriguez, a man who knows a thing or two about OTT violence, and directed by Nimrod Antal, who has several solid but unremarkable thrillers under his belt, what we really need to know is whether Predators has what it takes to restore a tarnished franchise. When gangly thesp Adrien Brody is the closest thing to an action star (he ran really fast in King Kong after all), none of the ingredients shout ‘instant classic’. Anyway, you can check out the footage below:
So far, it all looks like it’s worthy of a cautious optimism – it’s definitely more Arnie than Danny Glover, anyway. Whether it will be enough to take a way the foul taste left by Fox’s 15-year campaign to drive one of their coolest franchises into the dirt is anyone’s guess, however. A full trailer should be appearing on Friday, so we’ll have a better idea then.

Just caught a glimpse of Walton Goggins in the trailer, so we can expect some mad-eyed, method-acting Texan rambling, at the very least. Not sure how he can prepare for this one. I don’t think Danny Glover’s very busy these days.
As you say, best to file under ‘cautious optimism’ until we know more.

As an unabashed fanatical devotee of The Shield, I’m very pleased to see Walton Goggins is in this. As you say Dave, Rodriguez knows his violence – can’t say I’ve seen any of Nimrod (*snigger* – poor sod must have had cruel parents) Antal’s work, so yeah, I’m sticking with cautious optimism too.

Glad to hear Rodriguez say that it’s not worth trying to compete with Arnie in the original film but I wonder what he means by “going totally the other way”?
Put me down for the “cautious optimism” viewpoint too…
