Film isn’t the only alternate medium to benefit from Philip K. Dick’s fictional touch. More over Minority Report and Blade Runner, because Dick’s 1969 science-fiction short story, The Electric Ant, joins the recently invigorated Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? (BOOM! Studios)—this time courtesy of Marvel and Electric Shepherd Productions.
Throughout his career, Dick has raked in more than a few prestigious awards for his mighty collection (now 45 novels and over 210 short stories strong), including the Hugo and John W. Campbell Awards. April’s issue of Philip K. Dick’s Electric Ant #1 adapts the original with writer David Mack’s (Daredevil, Kabuki), artist Pascal Alixe’s (Ultimate X-Men), and cover artist Paul Pope’s (Strange Tales) visionary talents.
“Philip K. Dick is one of the most groundbreaking sci-fi authors ever and we’re honored to bring his stories to life at Marvel,” announced Joe Quesada, Chief Creative Officer and Editor-in-Chief of Marvel Entertainment. “Electric Ant is an extraordinary interpretation of Philip K. Dick’s classic short story, one that I’m sure all fans will enjoy.”
The comic book graphically reinvents character Garson Poole, whose daily life seems on track with a rewarding job, high-scale apartment, and libidinous assistant, but a hospital visit threatens to dismantle his perfect reality. Learning he’s an “Electric Ant,” a robot programmed for an explicit purpose, Poole investigates his robotic origins and reality itself with tenacious resolve.
Dick’s daughters, Laura Leslie and Isa Dick Hackett, are partners in Electric Shepherd Productions. Regarding the comic news, Leslie expressed, “As the first original adaptation of our father’s work into this genre, we are thrilled with the creative team and the support of Marvel in the care they have taken to be true to the integrity of this story.”
