OneMetal.com REVIEW:
Sergeant – Sergeant

sergeantcoverFor the past few years it seems the new and upcoming rock bands from the UK have been predominantly indie (The Cribs, The Enemy, Babyshambles etc) and some haven’t actually been too bad. Some however are so bland and musically boring that it’s hard to see why they even bothered picking up an instrument in the first place. Sergeant fall in between the two, perhaps slightly leaning toward the latter.

This being their debut album they could be forgiven for trying to sound like a lot of other bands at once before finding their own sound, but it gets annoying fast. The drumming doesn’t change throughout the entire LP, which doesn’t help when trying to differentiate between songs. Luckily the guitarist has a few spasms at certain points and plays something a bit more interesting whilst Nick Mercer’s vocals plod along with a generic indie voice in tow.

The album does have its highlights though, tracks such as ‘Away With The Fairies’ and ‘Sue Loves It’ have good strong intros and continue to remain so for the following four minutes. After a while the music does begin to grow on you slowly…very slowly, which isn’t what you want from a new band’s debut, it should instantly hit you that these guys are great and are going to be huge – but sadly not.

Despite the one or two tracks that do stand out, Sergeant just isn’t a good album. There’s nothing overwhelmingly interesting or different about it, it could have been thrown together using samples from other bands. Although I don’t doubt they have a lot of fans, most bands of this ilk have a somewhat cult following and will probably hunt me down after this review, but I don’t think they’re ready for the mainstream just yet.

Bottom Line

The album just never gets off the ground, it tries to make a break for it once or twice but just doesn't deliver. Instead its just a blend of uninsipirational sound spread over 11 tracks, but could be capable of much more.
