OneMetal.com NEWS:
Ron Howard wants to make ‘The Strange Adventures of H.P. Lovecraft.’

Ron Howard – forever in out hearts as Richie Cunningham – is looking to move into darker terotory for his next project. Howards is looking to direct a feature film adaptation of the horror comic book The Strange Adventures of H.P. Lovecraft.

The Image series, by Mac Carter and Jeff Blitz, combines real-life events from the famous horror author’s early life, such as his mental illness, and bring in fantasy elements, including an accursed book that lets the evils he writes about into the real world. Carter will also write the script.

Howard told the Los Angeles Times.

Ron HowardIt very cleverly uses H.P. Lovecraft in a fictional way, but there’s some loose biographical elements. But it certainly has the flavor and the tone of Lovecraft

Ron HowardThe character is a very young Lovecraft.

Ron Howard Lovecraft will be challenging, but if we get it right, it could be really original and psychologically interesting and scary in a great way. And it’s a graphic novel, this is new territory for me.

Although this project is still in the ether, I have to say I really hope this happens. Ron Howard has proven himself a very capable director with films such as ‘Apollo 13′ and ‘A Beautiful Mind’ and the original comic book material is really excellent. But as Red from The Shawshank Redemption points out.. ‘Hope is a dangerous thing. Hope can drive a man insane.’, and who is going to argue with Red.. not me.

Bet it doesn’t mention Lovecraft’s deep-seated racism… Seriously though, Ron Howard? Yeah, he’s a capable director, if by ‘capable’ you mean ‘capable of competently framing and shooting a page of script without bringing anything remotely individualistic, imaginative or eye-catching to the table’. Lovecraftian material needs someone with a strong visual style, a Guillermo Del Toro or a David Fincher, maybe. Ah well… expectations suitably lowered.

Well.. I take your point about Howard. To be honest I think that he is able to deliver clean direction and that that’s not necessarily a bad thing, providing you cast is up to scratch.

However you are quite right .. give me Guillermo Del Toro any day of the week, he would be an awesome choice for this movie. Mind you, I think he would be an awesome choice for almost anything, up to and including EastEnders… hum, let your minds mull that one over.
