“It is a truth universally acknowledged that a zombie in possession of brains must be in want of more brains.”
Picking up ‘Pride and Prejudice and Zombies’ by Los Angeles author and screenwriter Seth Grahame-Smith, you are confronted with and odd feeling. This New York Times bestselling book is exactly what it says it is, and at the same time you have no idea what to expect.
The book is listed as being co-authored as it retains 85% of the original text of Jane Austen’s ‘Pride and Prejudice’. However in this version, England has been beset by a decades-long zombie plague. London is a walled city, and the militia is camped out in the countryside keep the “stricken,” “sorry stricken,” “undead,” or “unmentionables” (the word “zombie” did not enter the English language until 1871) from becoming a nuisance.
Elizabeth Bennet is determined to wipe out the zombie menace, with graphical, gore-filled, bone-crunching head smashing passion, and yet she’s distracted by the arrival of the haughty and arrogant Mr. Darcy. What is the biggest challenge she must over come, the hordes of the undead or the social prejudices of the class-conscious landed gentry?
Del Rey Books have announced that they will publish ‘Pride and Prejudice and Zombies: The Graphic Novel. The graphic novel will be adapted by Tony Lee, who has worked extensively in comics, writing for such licenses as X-Men, Spider Man and Starship Troopers. Illustration will be by Cliff Richards, a veteran artist best known for his five-year run on the Buffy the Vampire Slayer comics series. He has also worked for both DC Comics and Marvel Comics.
An interesting thing to contemplate who this book is pitched at... you might well imagine that many a Zombie fan is perhaps not so inclined to pick up 'Pride and Prejudice'', and as the text is 85% the classical novel it would be a mistake to imagine this is not very much that book at essence. However the Zombification of the book is excellent, violent and bloody.. so I think this is one you are going to have to have to make your own call on. However, If nothing else the idea alone should merit not insignificant credit.

Well, I do love zombies… but I found myself enjoying this book much more for the P&P elements than the unmentionables. The artwork was hilarious though, I especially enjoyed Darcy being on the receiving end of a roundhouse kick… heh.
Peri says:
Although you do not have to read P&P to enjoy this book it is half the fun. If you dont want to read the book I suggest that you at least watch the movie first. =)
Also dont leave out ‘The Zombie Survival Guide’ from your must read Zombie book list… Im convinced its going to save my life one day.
